The first thing you see with Merlot Pink is the silvery-bronze foliage. It is not as dark as other selections, but the new growth has more of a reddish hue. It grows better than some of the mini varieties of dark leaf weigelas, though it is medium sized at 3′ tall by 4′ wide it responds well to trimming making a nice full form even as it ages. In the mid-late spring the leaves are all but obscured by the prolific floral display of intense pink blooms with white blush on the inside edge of the petals. The color scheme of the foliage/flower combination is very attractive.
